Farmer plans 'illegal' festival

A County Durham farmer has pledged to continue with a three-day music festival, despite warnings that he faces legal action.

Andy Norman expects more than 1,000 people to attend the Thimbleberry festival on land at Stanhope, Weardale.

But Wear Valley District Council has warned Mr Norman he faces legal action because the event, which begins on Friday, is not licensed.

Police urged against enforcement action because it could provoke disorder.

Neighbours of Mr Norman complained to council bosses about the prospect of late-night noise.

Noise problem

But Mr Norman, who is charging £40 a ticket for the event at his 58-acre site, said: "It is definitely going ahead.

"I accept that late-night noise is a problem, but it is down to me to ensure that it is at an acceptable level, and that I shall do.

"Farmers are being encouraged to diversify because there are problems in farming at the moment and the more things we can do, the better for the area."

A spokesman for Wear Valley District Council said: "Officers of the council, together with Durham Police will monitor events this weekend.

"The event has not been licensed by us and should it take place, it will do so illegally.

"Monitoring will take place with a view to taking appropriate action, possibly involving legal proceedings.

"The police have advised that any attempt to stop the event taking place at this late stage would involve large numbers of police officers and could result in serious public disorder."
